Translation (English to Vietnamese), Third Session

I start a new project in translation (English to Vietnamese), and would like to have your comments. I use Skype to discuss with trainees texts translated by them. It's very practical, down to earth.
This is the third session:

[1:26:20 PM] Jolie Tran: Hi Nguyen. See me now?
[1:26:21 PM] Jolie Tran: :)
[1:33:13 PM] Jolie Tran: Can you see us, Prof?
[1:33:39 PM] Hạnh Nguyên Nguyễn Ngọc: I see you.
[1:34:06 PM] Ngoc Tran: Hi. OK. We can start the third session now. It's still with the same text Joli Tran did last week.
[1:35:12 PM] Jolie Tran: Yes, Prof. Now we'll start with the first sentence: "Many people find that search engines often bring up disappointing results from dubious sources."
[1:35:41 PM] Jolie Tran: My suggestion is: "Nhiều người thấy rằng máy tìm kiếm thường mang lại kết quả đáng thất vọng từ những nguồn không đáng tin."
[1:35:45 PM] Hạnh Nguyên Nguyễn Ngọc: Ok. My translation is "Nhiều người nhận thấy rằng máy tìm kiếm thường mang lại các kết quả đáng thất vọng từ những nguồn thông tin không đáng tin cậy."
[1:37:14 PM] Ngoc Tran: Nguyen added 'cậy' [tin cậy].
[1:38:37 PM] Jolie Tran: Yes, I agree with her word choice here, yet I hope we can try to avoid the repetition here, "nguồn thông tin" and "tin cậy".
[1:39:19 PM] Ngoc Tran: Good. But I'd like both of you to think again about the Vietnamese sentence in term of grammar:  does it miss something?
[1:41:32 PM] Jolie Tran: Well, I am not quite sure, Prof.
[1:41:48 PM] Ngoc Tran: And Nguyen?
[1:42:14 PM] Hạnh Nguyên Nguyễn Ngọc: I'm not sure, either, Prof.
[1:45:34 PM] Ngoc Tran: OK. It's a trap: I've set you up!
[1:46:03 PM] Ngoc Tran: Go on with the next sentence.
[1:46:26 PM] Jolie Tran: God, no wonder I am feeling weird, Prof. :D
[1:47:01 PM] Jolie Tran: So the translation of this sentence is: "Nhiều người thấy rằng máy tìm kiếm thường mang lại kết quả đáng thất vọng từ những nguồn thông tin không đáng tin cậy."
[1:47:09 PM] Jolie Tran: Is it, Prof?
[1:47:39 PM] Ngoc Tran: You can skip 'thông tin'
[1:47:57 PM] Jolie Tran: I see, Prof.
[1:48:53 PM] Hạnh Nguyên Nguyễn Ngọc: So the final version is "Nhiều người nhận thấy rằng máy tìm kiếm thường mang lại các kết quả đáng thất vọng từ những nguồn không đáng tin cậy". Is it, Prof?
[1:49:35 PM] Ngoc Tran: Ok.
[1:49:40 PM] Jolie Tran: So the next sentence is: "A few tricks, however, can ensure that you corner the pages you are looking for, from sites you can trust."
[1:50:13 PM] Jolie Tran: My translation: "Tuy nhiên, chỉ với vài thủ thuật, chắc chắn bạn sẽ khoanh vùng được những trang đáng tin và từ đó tìm ra những trang phù hợp nhất."
[1:50:48 PM] Jolie Tran: Here I have a big problem when looking for equivalents for "site" and "page"
[1:51:15 PM] Jolie Tran: I know how to distinguish them but cannot find proper terms.
[1:51:27 PM] Jolie Tran: How about you, Nguyen?
[1:52:07 PM] Hạnh Nguyên Nguyễn Ngọc: My suggestion is "Tuy nhiên, một vài thủ thuật có thể đảm bảo rằng bạn đánh dấu các trang mà bạn đang tìm kiếm từ những trang web bạn tin tưởng." I'm sorry. I don't quite understand this sentence.
[1:53:38 PM] Hạnh Nguyên Nguyễn Ngọc: I got the same problem. "Site" and "page". I also cannot find equivalent terms for them in Vietnamese.
[1:53:52 PM] Jolie Tran: I think I should modify my suggestion a little bit: "Tuy nhiên, chỉ với vài thủ thuật, chắc chắn bạn sẽ khoanh vùng được những website đáng tin và từ đó tìm ra những trang tin phù hợp nhất."
[1:54:38 PM] Jolie Tran: I think if I can keep the original term of "website" in the target text, then it may be fine. Yet I think you will be more approved of rendering them all into Vietnamese.
[1:57:40 PM] Ngoc Tran: Tran's translation is good. But I'd explain a little bit about the meaning of this sentence to Nguyen: The writer said that if you knew 'a few tricks' [which would be explain later on], you could find pages in which you'd get information you're seeking for.
[1:58:34 PM] Hạnh Nguyên Nguyễn Ngọc: Ok. Thanks a lot Prof. I understand it now.
[1:59:17 PM] Ngoc Tran: We can move now to the next sentence.
[2:00:42 PM] Jolie Tran: So I can keep the term"website" in the target text, right?
[2:01:16 PM] Ngoc Tran: Yes, of course.
[2:03:00 PM] Jolie Tran: Next sentence is: "The same goes for searching social networks and other sources to locate people: A bit of strategy and an understanding of how to extract what you need will improve results."
[2:08:34 PM] Ngoc Tran: Both versions are OK. But Nguyen is a little bit word-to-word translation, ie 'cách thức trích ra'; i'd want you to edit it.
[2:10:00 PM] Ngoc Tran: And you both use 'định vị' for 'locate', which isn't wrong, but doesn’t sound Vietnamese.
[2:10:20 PM] Jolie Tran: I think my words are not quite smooth in the latter half: "A bit of strategy and an understanding of how to extract what you need will improve results."
[2:11:18 PM] Jolie Tran: I tried to find Vietnamese equivalents but then it still sounds quite "foreign": "........cộng với kiến thức để có được điều mình muốn sẽ giúp bạn cải thiện kết quả tìm kiếm."
[2:11:34 PM] Jolie Tran: Ok, Prof. I will think of another word.
[2:12:38 PM] Ngoc Tran: You can paraphrase the whole sentence.
[2:16:21 PM] Ngoc Tran: Forget to tell you that in journalism, when we talk about sources, mostly we refer to 'people'. But we also use document, other written materials as sources, and ourselves too [in rare cases in which we're a witness].
[2:16:46 PM] Hạnh Nguyên Nguyễn Ngọc: How about this suggestion: "Một chút chiến thuật và kiến thức về việc làm thế nào để có được điều bạn cần sẽ cải thiện kết quả tìm kiếm"? What do you think Prof?
[2:17:39 PM] Jolie Tran: I see Prof. But here, still we refer "sources" to "data/information source", don't we?
[2:19:19 PM] Ngoc Tran: Not really Nguyen. And to answer your question, Tran, 'locate people' in this sentence means 'find people' [human sources].
[2:21:53 PM] Jolie Tran: I see, Prof.
[2:23:19 PM] Ngoc Tran: human source = nguồn tin là người
[2:25:15 PM] Jolie Tran: So the translation will be modified: "Bạn cũng có thể áp dụng những thủ thuật này khi tìm kiếm trên mạng xã hội hay từ những nguồn khác để tìm kiếm con người."
[2:26:31 PM] Jolie Tran: Ah
[2:26:39 PM] Ngoc Tran: I'd rather not use 'tìm kiếm con người', but 'tim kiếm nguồn tin là người', instead.
[2:27:43 PM] Jolie Tran: Don't you think that sounds not so native, Sir. I think the idea here is:
[2:28:03 PM] Ngoc Tran: Or 'tìm kiếm nguồn tin là những người hiểu biết'.
[2:28:07 PM] Jolie Tran: We can use Search engines to find information of humans/ not from humans.
[2:28:18 PM] Jolie Tran: I think that's different.
[2:28:46 PM] Ngoc Tran: Go ahea with your reasoning.
[2:28:59 PM] Ngoc Tran: Go ahead
[2:30:25 PM] Jolie Tran: Because today, we have some kinda state-of-the-art technology to locate people (GPS, geographically) and other channels to connect and "locate" them even just online.
[2:31:18 PM] Jolie Tran: and the topic here is "search", so after talking a bit of searching for information (in most cases we do), the author talks about locating humans also.
[2:31:22 PM] Ngoc Tran: Don't go so far…
[2:33:23 PM] Jolie Tran: I am just explaining my opinions, Prof, but the idea of "locating people" in the text is easy to associate, I think. :(
[2:33:35 PM] Ngoc Tran: OK.
[2:33:38 PM] Jolie Tran: How about you Nguyen?
[2:34:16 PM] Jolie Tran: You are so silent. Come on, girl! :)
[2:34:29 PM] Hạnh Nguyên Nguyễn Ngọc: I also think like Tran. By the way, my suggestion for my translation is "một chút chiến thuật và kiến thức để đạt được điều bạn cần sẽ cải thiện kết quả tìm kiếm."
[2:36:57 PM] Hạnh Nguyên Nguyễn Ngọc: I also think "locate people " in the text means finding out where they are.
[2:38:15 PM] Ngoc Tran: Nguyen: OK. But your translation isn't clear. And forgot to tell both of you: chiến lược= strategy; chiến thuật= tactics.
[2:41:02 PM] Ngoc Tran: Should wrap up now. So send me the  re- translation of the whole sentence.
[2:41:18 PM] Hạnh Nguyên Nguyễn Ngọc: If we use "chiến lược", I don't think we can use "một chút" before it. Is that right Prof?
[2:42:09 PM] Ngoc Tran: paraphrase it.
[2:43:05 PM] Ngoc Tran: Try to think you're speaking to a friend.
[2:46:40 PM] Ngoc Tran: I let you think till ...next week. And you've a new assignment too: translate these [about traveling by plane]: Nesting in the Skies
The simplest way to guarantee a decent meal and some legroom is to upgrade to first class, but if you don’t have the luxury of spending a few hundred extra for premium seats, all is not lost.
“Most air carriers configure their long-haul economy cabins with slightly more legroom and added amenities,” said Patrick Smith, a pilot who is author of “Cockpit Confidential: Everything You Need to Know About Air Travel.”
These amenities typically include free access to entertainment consoles, meals and alcoholic beverages. In other words, airlines are not completely evil, and are less likely to nickel-and-dime you during long-haul flights.
That also applies to legroom. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of leg space available in economy class during my first long haul to South Africa. But this does vary by airline.
[2:46:53 PM] Hạnh Nguyên Nguyễn Ngọc: So my translation is "Việc tìm kiếm trên các mạng xã hội và các nguồn thông tin khác để xác định vị trí con người cũng tương tự như vậy. Kết quả tìm kiếm sẽ được cải thiện nếu bạn có chút chiến lược và kiến thức để đạt được điều bạn cần".
[2:47:32 PM] Jolie Tran: I think hers sounds good, Prof.
[2:48:21 PM] Ngoc Tran: Not 'xác định vị trí con người'. it's awkward.
[2:48:55 PM] Ngoc Tran: But I've to quit you now. Have a nice weekend.
[2:49:42 PM] Ngoc Tran: Bye.
[2:50:02 PM] Hạnh Nguyên Nguyễn Ngọc: OK. I will think of a better translation. Have a nice weekend Prof.
[2:50:28 PM] Jolie Tran: Prof, I think it could be "tìm kiếm con người" or "định vị con người." Since we have GPS as "thiết bị định vị" so the term "định vị" now is not so strange any more.
[2:50:53 PM] Jolie Tran: Good bye, Prof. May you have a blessed weekend. Thank you for all your instruction.
